Job description: FUNCTION: The Accounting Supervisor leads a wide range of comprehensive accounting and analytical functions within the Accounting Department by independently preparing, analyzing, reviewing and reporting on the Bank, its products and services, and peers and by supervising and providing support to other members of the team toward achieving these objectives. Performs a wide range of highly complex accounting and analytical functions and assures day-to-day operations are carried out in accordance with established accounting principles, policies and objectives and federal and state regulations. Is a leader within the department and throughout the Bank, is a self-starter, and continually seeks and implements efficiencies in processes and provides recommendations for enhancements. Collaborates with employees at all levels of the organization to achieve the objectives set by internal and external customers.

Accountabilities:

Assumes responsibility to:

  • Oversee/lead the preparation, review and coordination of financial reports to include one or more of the following:
  • Budgeting/forecasting of the Bank financial statements
  • Regulatory reporting
  • Month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing and reporting of financial results
  • Account reconciliation
  • Allowance for loan loss analysis and reporting
  • Business line analysis and reporting
  • Accounting for Bank fixed assets
  • Accounting for Bank investments
  • Support, guide and advise team members in all aspects of work
  • Maintain advanced technical abilities on the Bank’s general ledger, core processing system, accounting information systems, various databases and reporting tools, and be a resource to others in the department and Bank
  • Exercise broad discretion and creativity as to work details on assignments of a varied, diverse and difficult nature
  • Oversee the preparation of specialized or highly complex reports, analyses and interpretations in support of various accounting and reporting functions for management and outside agencies, utilizing advanced knowledge and proficiency in accounting practices, principles and interrelationships
  • Prepare and/or review compliance and regulatory oriented filings with FDIC, Federal Reserve Bank, etc. (including but not limited to quarterly Call Report, FR2900, Y-9LP, Summary of Deposits, etc.)
  • Create and maintain procedures affecting assigned functions
  • Solve problems and independently seek and implement solutions that streamline processes and enhance accuracy and quality of work; employ technology in daily work to enhance and maximize productivity
  • Contribute to the preparation of materials for internal and external audit requests and guide the preparation of materials performed by department team members; serve as a resource for auditor questions
  • Build relationships and provide ongoing accounting support for colleagues outside the Accounting Department and strive for the highest level of customer service
  • Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies, generally accepted accounting principles, and state and federal regulations related to the most complex accounting activities
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and regulatory changes, utilize appropriate professional, GAAP, tax and related literature; and communicate and educate the team and Bank colleagues accordingly
  • Be a “go-to” person within the department for technical support and training and throughout the Bank on system software and topics of expertise
  • Lead in creating and maintaining an environment that focuses on harmonious and effective relations with others, focusing upon the attainment of Bank goals and objectives through a commitment to teamwork
  • Maintain and update various Accounting Department systems
  • Perform review of work and procedures prepared by others within the department and the Bank
  • Provide backup when needed for Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Managers and other Supervisors
  • Identify, recommend and implement process improvements throughout the Bank that reduce cost, enhance revenue and improve work process efficiencies.
  • Offer interpretation, explanation and guidance of/for the most complex Bank reports and activities
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing accordingly to manage department and individual needs
  • Coach, support, and provide career guidance to members of the Accounting team through regular discussions both informal and formal, covering all aspects of employee performance management including coaching, goal setting, development, corrective action plans and performance reviews.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related area (business, accounting or finance); five-plus years of accounting or financial analysis experience
  • Supervisory experience and team building skills
  • Team player that works well under pressure
  • High degree of emotional intelligence and professional maturity
  • Strong analytical, organizational, verbal and written communication skills required
  • High proficiency with spreadsheets and database management
  • Advanced computer skills with ability to quickly learn multiple software applications
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and regulatory principles
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented with ability to work effectively with limited supervision in a multi-task environment
