A skilled technical position responsible for performing a variety of tasks associated with structural building inspection for the purpose of enforcing Florida Building codes, regulations and ordinances for both residential and commercial construction.

Applicants with structural discipline will be given preference. Applicants with multiple licenses will be given consideration for the position of Building Inspector – Multiple License – Salary Range: $47,569.60 – $73,736.00.

Example Of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned as dictated by operational necessity.

  • Inspect residential and commercial buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling and enforce compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations; recommend modifications and adjustments as necessary.
  • Inspect previously occupied buildings, spaces or suites for code compliance; approve inspected areas for certificates of occupancy.
  • Inspect existing residential and commercial structures for change of use, occupancy, or compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Inspect foundation, concrete, steel, masonry, wood construction, framing, truss, installations and a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements for both residential and commercial construction.
  • Confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public; explain and interpret requirements and restrictions of adopted codes and ordinances.
  • Answer questions and properly resolve issues and concerns regarding permits and code requirements;
  • Retrieve permit information from the computer; verify legal data including owners, tax records, and other data needed to issue permits.
  • Maintain files and reports regarding inspection activities and findings on all active projects.
  • Conducts examination of building plans, specifications, surveys, product approval, shop drawings and all other required documentation for code compliance.

  • Knowledge of residential and commercial construction, materials and methods of construction
  • Knowledge of safety standards and methods of building construction for commercial, industrial and residential buildings
  • Skill in organizing daily inspections, inspection files and test reports
  • Skill in detecting code violations within all required building construction
  • Skill in using specialized technical equipment as assigned
  • Ability to learn building related codes and ordinances adopted and enforced by the City, including currently adopted Building Codes and Zoning Ordinance.
  • Ability to interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex building plans, specifications and building codes.
  • Ability to determine if construction systems conform to City code requirements.
  • Ability to detect deviations from plans, regulations and standard construction practices.
  • Ability to advise on standard construction methods and requirements for residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
  • Ability to enforce regulations fairly, firmly, factually and with proper public relations skills.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate required.
  • Must have at least 4 years’ experience in the field of construction.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Demonstrates a combination of postsecondary education in the field of construction or a related field and experience which totals 3 years, with at least 1 year of such total being experience in construction, building code inspection, or plans review; or
  • Demonstrates a combination of technical education in the field of construction or a related field and experience which totals 3 years, with at least 1 year of such total being experience in construction, building code inspection, or plans review;
  • Ability to obtain a State of Florida Provisional Building Plan Review License (PX) within 120 days of hire, and a State of Florida Standard Building Plan Review license within 12 months; and
  • Ability to obtain a State of Florida Provisional Building Inspector License (BN) within 120 days of hire and a State of Florida Standard Building inspections license within 12 months
  • Preference will be given to those who hold a current standard State of Florida DBPR building inspectors license (s).
