SUMMARY: Provides day to day administration of the department including policy development, facilitation, and implementation of programs assigned to the department on an on-going or temporary basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Supports organizational policies, procedures, and goals.
- Responsible for budgets including development, tracking, accuracy and compliance for the department. Responsible for following budget process including deadlines and adherence to schedule and direction from Tribal Council, Budget Committee, Tribal Administrator and Comptroller.
- Provide Travel reports, and annual reports for the department.
- Participate in Director’s meetings, public meetings and team assignments as requested.
- Communicate with employees regarding their performance, training opportunities and career development.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position provides direct supervision to the Legal Department staff.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Candidate must have graduated from an accredited law school; have been licensed to practice and practicing in Washington for at least seven years; have a thorough knowledge of the Washington State legislature and its processes; have a working knowledge of federal Indian law principles and their interplay with state law; have good interpersonal communication skills; strong writing skills; and be willing to reside in the Olympia-Shelton area. Candidates must demonstrate ability to work collegially, a commitment to the tribal community, and a strong ethical character. Native American hiring preference will be in effect during the selection of candidates.
Candidate will be evaluated based on skills, experience, temperament and collegiality.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to interpret, understand and convey advanced economic, accounting and finance principles.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Washington. Must be able to be licensed to practice before the Squaxin Island Tribe’s Courts within 90 days of hire.

The employee will regularly lift up to ten pounds and occasionally up to 25-50 pounds. The job requires an ability to read and work at a computer with ease.
