The Janssen R&D vision is to become a leader in delivering medications to patients with unmet medical needs in six core therapeutic areas. R&D IT will drive this change through a series of core common technical capability areas reflecting the technical disruptors that have been identified. These areas align to the key skills and platforms that R&D IT must establish to strategically advance.

The R&D Systems & Platform Engineering team is seeking a self-starter with a Technical Product Owner background and hands-on technical expertise to drive our Intelligent Automation Strategy. This person will drive delivery on products contributing to Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and sophisticated automation use cases to drive value across the R&D functions. They will manage moderate size product deliveries and will manage relationships across Business, IT, JJTS, Compliance, Clinical, Regulatory, Safety, BRQC, Procurement and Finance.

As a Technical Product Owner, a key responsibility will be to gather unmet needs across the business functions that will contribute to a backlog of IA capabilities that will drive additional business value. In the business process automation area this will include incorporating cognitive capabilities to RPA solutions such an NLP or ML to drive greater value for automations. This will also include investigating capabilities such as Process & Task Mining, matching them to R&D use cases, conducting PoC and scaling up within the Product Team.

This role will work directly with the Intelligent Automation Product Manager. This role will own vision and prioritization of new features and/or improvement to a product and help translate business needs into prioritized user stories; accountable for value delivery and value realization at the squad level.

The position will require being able to understand the needs of multiple collaborators. Perform current and future state business process mappings. And most importantly, help internal partners articulate business pain points and challenges by crafting a well-defined proof of concept to experiment with a technology solution that may help address the need. The candidate will be responsible for crafting the design of the technical solution in preparation to transition the project for agile software development, driving toward production to realize business value.


  • Increase traction in connecting Intelligent Automation capabilities in Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and ongoing efforts in the machine learning aspects to create a series of intelligent automation examples to develop business case projections for business planning.
  • Raise the maturity our Intelligent Automation strategy to the next level by extending the current reusability of the RPA team and the experience of the data sciences platforms & project teams to combine these skill sets and produce higher value opportunities meant to show the possibility of IA to R&D business.
  • The delivery of these efforts will require delivery oversight from a technology perspective delivering automations of Janssen R&D processes involving Pharma R&D source applications
  • Self-starter, highly focused individual contributor with strong experience in hands on development and defining opportunities to keep high value automations increasing in value over the initial RPA pipeline.
  • Startup like mentality combined with experienced capability deployment will lead to rapid prototyping that are more likely to be able to be turned into a production capability.
  • Shape the squad vision / roadmap and steer the squad in delivering products / platforms features / work oriented around business impact
  • Shape and prioritize backlog, utilizing business expertise and understanding of customer needs, translate requirements into user stories & acceptance criteria
  • Balance business value with technical feasibility while prioritizing stories and features, optimizing cost and improving delivery efficiency
  • Act as the “voice of the customer” within the squad to ensure the squad “builds the right thing”
  • Plan resourcing for the squad (i.e. new role, change in role), create ASOE requests, interview, select and onboard members to join the squad
  • Work closely with Product Manager to establish the products’ value and support messaging, comms and customer outreach
  • Ensure the products / features / work meets relevant security, privacy & compliance standards
  • Drive selection of solution options, work with the Lead Engineer to assess tech elements of the solution prior to user testing
  • Work with Lead Engineer to balance tech debt with feature delivery
  • Collaborate to ensure all partners are clear on product roadmap activities, design, interdependencies and timelines

Expected Activities:

  • Identifying and crafting appropriate automation workflows
  • Investigating new automation technologies that may be required to deliver business value and add to core platforms in conjunction with data science teams and data platforms teams
  • The role will directly supervise development resources in short sprint POCs of different opportunities to invite a deeper understanding of the business process, show instant value by coding the happy path to gain 50% usability thereby allowing to the business in the engagement so slower development is incremental increase, create excitement.
  • Lead those who are needed on an as required basis to help designing, documenting, developing and performing test automation plans from business requirements
  • Reports status, issues and risks to leadership on a regular basics


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have at least 2 years of hands-on experience in Robotic Process Automation enterprise platform
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Information Science or Business Administration/Management or related field
  • 2 years in Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) or IT Architecture
  • Hands-on Agile Application Development experience


  • Blue Prism RPA experience
  • Knowledge of application development technologies, tools, methodologies and the enterprise
  • 1-2 year of python development experience
  • 1-2 years’ experience with Machine Learning or Natural Language Processing
  • Preferred experience with agile processes such as: SCRUM/Kanban and tools like JIRA
  • Metric reporting techniques including iteration and release methodologies
  • Connect with all levels – strong maturity and comfort in engaging with a broad list of collaborators. Comfort managing expectations and strategic conversations with various business partners, including senior leaders
  • Good presentation and facilitation skills to business and IT audiences
  • Ability to manage a vendor partner relationship and having awareness on moments when to empower, call out or educate partners and colleagues.
  • Ability to problem solve and think creatively about technology solutions to complete a business or program need.
  • Big picture thinking with attention to detail: looking for areas of improvement to create growth and joint value for our customer
  • Demonstrated experience being adaptable and willing to work on varying assignments within a team
  • Ability to work with internal customers to gather and understand requirements
  • Issue and Risk Management techniques
  • Position may require up to 10% travel

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $101,500 to $142,000.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
