Job Description

The Simmons University Violence Prevention and Educational Outreach Program is excited to announce the re-opening of our, student-facing VPEO Coordinator position. At Simmons, we take an innovative, intersectional, and social justice-based approach to violence prevention, education, and awareness. Our work prioritizes providing students with the holistic tools needed to cultivate lifelong healthy relationships and emphasizes community accountability. By addressing the underlying conditions that perpetuate violence, we have an opportunity to transform the way that our students and communities engage with each other.

Reporting to and working in partnership with the Director of the REEF Support Center, Matoaka Kipp, you will be responsible for strategic and relevant programming that encourages students to examine how gender-based violence impacts their communities, with a focus on igniting these conversations in our Black, Indigenous, and Student of Color populations, Queer/Trans populations, and other marginalized groups. Through this work, the Program Coordinator promotes students’ ability to envision and actualize healthy relationships and safer, consensual sex.

In addition to program planning, you will oversee the vibrant Betsy’s Friends Peer Education Program. As their advisor, you will foster student leaders to create programming that meets the unique needs of our women’s-centered institution and identify creative outreach opportunities. This position is best suited for someone who loves working with young activists, is creative, thinks outside the box, enjoys collaboration, and works towards a radical vision of what a truly violence-free community can look like.

Primary Responsibilities:

Programming and Training:

1 on 1 Survivor Support (50%)

Triage individualized graduate and undergraduate student cases, identify and assist in facilitating supportive measures, and align students with the right on and off-campus resources.

Serve as a Confidential Resource Person on campus under the jurisdiction of Title IX and the University’s Sexual Harassment Policy.

Partner closely with the University’s Title IX Coordinator to support students.

Work closely with staff in the Counseling Center, Health Center, and other survivor-specific supports in the greater Boston community;

Respond to students of concern through the CARE team, as appropriate, providing follow-up, support and referral.

Programming and Community Engagement (40%)

Oversee VPEO yearly budget.

Work in collaboration with the REEF Support Center, Multicultural Center, and other Student Affairs offices to identify and implement programming for the University’s students, with a focus on targeted programming to meet the needs of students of color, queer and trans/non-binary students, students with disabilities, etc.

Engage long-standing and new partners in campus-wide programming focusing on intimate partner relationships, consent, safer sex practices, self-advocacy, and general survivor support.

Partner with the Wellness Ambassador Program to intentionally merge conversations and education around sexuality, sexual health, sex-positivity, pleasure and sexual consent, and provide students with skills to discuss these important topics with their partners

Create and implement training and programming focused on intersectional social justice issues in relation to violence prevention and healthy relationships as requested for student leaders (such as Resident Advisors and Orientation Leaders).

Cultivate a survivor-centered, trauma-informed and healing-focused approach to violence prevention and education

Write and present an annual report to highlight emerging student needs and trends, annual programming, student attendance at events, and the impact of prevention initiatives

Supervision (10%)

Serve as the primary supervisor of our student VPEO programming group, Betsy’s Friends.

Provide Betsy’s Friends guidance and support in programming, attending weekly meetings, and providing logistical support for material ordering and planning.

In partnership with the Betsy’s Friends leader, design training for student peer educators and members to plan and implement violence prevention and education programs on campus

Support the hiring and re-hiring of Betsy’s Friends team each academic year

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or 3+ years experience in social work, counseling, public health, survivor support, or another related field.

1-3 years of experience working in violence prevention and survivor advocacy or other related fields

Familiarity with Title IX Federal law and the implications of gender-based misconduct on college campuses

Experience working with youth and/or college-age students

Prior experience creating, facilitating, planning and implementing unique, engaging and relevant programming ideas a plus

Commitment to holding the complexity of the human experience, intersectionality, and centering the dynamics of power, privilege, and oppression

Strong oral and written communication

Rape Crisis Counselor or Domestic Violence Survivor Advocate certification, or a willingness to obtain this certification upon hire sponsored by Simmons

Willing and able to host regular after-hours programming and work occasional weekends

Compensation:

The VPEO Coordinator role will be a part-time, 20 hours per week, position for 32 weeks to support the academic calendar and is paid over annual salary.
